The formula
Packs = area × (1 + waste) ÷ pack coverage. Pack coverage is printed on the end of the box; if you do not have it, the calculator works it out from the plank size and the number of planks.
Worked example
A 4 × 5 m room is 20 m². With a 2.131 m² pack and 7% waste: 21.4 ÷ 2.131 = 10.04 → 11 packs. Keep the leftovers: a damaged plank can then be replaced without lifting the whole floor.
Waste depends on the layout

Underlay and skirting
Underlay is bought for the same area, usually in 10–15 m² rolls. Skirting is the room perimeter minus door openings, plus one length for cuts. Do not forget the 8–10 mm expansion gap around the room: laminate swells with humidity and without the gap the floor lifts.
When the maths changes
In an L-shaped room count each rectangle separately and add them up. Rooms longer than 8 m need an expansion profile, which affects both the cutting plan and the amount of skirting.
