The formula
Volume of one board = length × width × thickness (all in metres). Boards per cubic metre = 1 ÷ the volume of one board.
Worked example
A board 6 m × 150 mm × 25 mm: 6 × 0.15 × 0.025 = 0.0225 m³. One cubic metre holds 44.4 such boards, so 200 boards make 4.5 m³.

Why the count never matches
- Actual size. Planed dry boards are narrower than nominal: 145 mm instead of 150. The seller measures actual size, the buyer assumes nominal.
- Moisture. Green timber shrinks 3–5% in width and thickness as it dries.
- Measuring method. Edged boards are measured piece by piece, unedged timber by stack volume with a coefficient. Two different numbers for the same pile.
When taking delivery, measure several boards from different parts of the stack and compare with the delivery note.
